Was telling nick the other day about my love for old hymns n poems n stuff, n how actually, some of them are reeeeeeally cool, and quite profound...if you can get round the old english.
Was in waterstones on tuesday reading an old hymn book. mmm. :) such a dork...! :P
I think, i love the poetry in them, probably why i love the psalms, a book with passion. Makes me kinda miss english lit :P
Anyway, heres a hymn, take time to pick it apart and understand the old english, put it into your own language, its actually really cool. :)
Thou only Sovereign of my heart,
My Refuge, my almighty Friend—
And can my soul from Thee depart,
On Whom alone my hopes depend?
Whither, ah whither shall I go,
A wretched wanderer from my Lord?
Can this dark world of sin and woe
One glimpse of happiness afford?
Eternal life Thy words impart;
On these my fainting spirit lives;
Here sweeter comforts cheer my heart
Than all the round of nature gives.
Let earth’s alluring joys combine,
While Thou art near, in vain they call;
One smile, one blissful smile of Thine,
My dearest Lord, outweighs them all.
